NEWARK, N.J. (AP) — When a traveler became stricken at Newark Liberty International Airport, the police got an assist from a celebrity doctor: Mehmet Oz. The next round of Jeopardy guest hosts has been announced, and it includes Dr. Oz, Anderson Cooper, Savannah Guthrie and Dr. Sanjay Gupta. For each guest host's appearance, a donation will be made to a charity of their choice equal to the cumulative winnings of the contestants on their respective episodes.

The renewal comes as the long-running syndication staple launches its 12th season today.

Distributor Sony Pictures Television announced this morning that Fox Television Stations have agreed to continue airing the syndicated health-and-fitness talk show through the 2018-19 season, which would be its 10th.

It's been a humbling stretch for the heart surgeon who built his own successful syndicated talk show. Critics, including some in Congress, scolded the hyperactive health evangelist for promoting questionable diet aids he's since sworn off. In April, a group of 10 doctors urged that he be removed from Columbia University's medical faculty, accusing him of promoting "quack treatments." His show has lost half its viewers over the past five years. His show begins its seventh season today.

Producers and distributors are hard at work revamping and tweaking magazines, game shows and talkers to improve ratings come September. Nothing's off limits, including sets, hosts, formats and staff. Case in point: Access Hollywood, which is getting a new set behind those doors.

Dr. Michael Crupain joins the syndicated show in the newly created position of chief of staff of the medical unit that researches and verifies scripts, evaluates expert guests and edits medical animations.

Dr. Mehmet Oz will air an episode of his syndicated talk show today that specifically takes on the group of 10 doctors from around the country who wrote to a Columbia dean about him. The group suggested last week that Oz promotes "quack treatments" of weight loss supplements with no scientific proof that they work.

"Dr. Oz has repeatedly shown disdain for science and for evidence-based medicine," said a letter 10 physicians sent to a Columbia University dean earlier this week. Led by Dr. Henry Miller of California's Stanford University, the doctors wrote that Oz "has manifested an egregious lack of integrity by promoting quack treatments and cures in the interest of personal financial gain."

New talk show The Real is doing well with younger women but Meredith Vieira is struggling, as did prior shows starring former Today co-hosts.

While his day-time health show reaches millions, Dr. Oz has come under fire for endorsing nutrition supplements with dubious efficacy. Today, Oz was on Capitol Hill to testify on a Senate hearing about such weight loss scams, and to address his role in providing fodder for false advertisements.

The North Carolina NBC affiliate will be featured on the syndicated talk show on May 23 for its efforts to help area residents lose weight and adopt a healthier lifestyle.

Dr. Oz has been kicking it up a notch this season and winning new viewers. As a cardiac surgeon, Dr. Mehmet Oz is used to paying attention to details. And he brings that same laser focus to his Sony-distributed talk show. He visits stations, tapes promotional spots for them and advertisers, does interviews, gathers feedback and pours over ratings books to learn what works and what doesn't. Those are some of the reasons he's got syndication's No. 2 talker.

Last fall, Dr. Phil used the Penn State scandal to address sexual abuse of children. With ratings in a slump, Dr. Phil and his producers decided to focus more on topical subjects that women can use to deal with real-life issues.
